The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens is a multi-purpose lens, providing users with a highly useful focal length range to photograph a wide variety of subjects. The lens perfectly complements the versatile Nikon Z 6, producing sharp and vibrant images across the entire frame. In this article, we take a look at its characteristics and depictive power. In this shot, I wanted to incorporate the usage of leading lines with the addition of an incidental figure as the main subject. The maximum aperture of f/4 allows me to work in low light conditions for interior shots, enabling faster shutter speeds to be utilized at low ISO sensitivities. The addition of the powerful in-camera 5-axis VR image stabilization empowers me to capture moments in low-light surroundings at lower shutter speeds—up to 5 stops of stabilization—as sharp photos.

Wide-angle lenses are often utilized when photographing architecture in order to capture the structure as a whole and create a sense of scale, but longer focal lengths can be utilized to create a denser image of an elongated structure such as this train station as the perspective gets compressed. The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S resolves all the intricate lines and details for a compelling image.
One of the key factors in choosing a lens is usually the weight and size. Weighing approximately 500g, and being only 108mm long at 24mm focal length, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a lightweight and compact yet versatile lens, suitable for many purposes. This allows it to be a perfect lens companion for the newly designed Z series mirrorless cameras. The addition of the rotate-to-use lens design function allows the lens to be “compressed” to a mere 88.59mm, which makes it exceptionally compact and convenient for storage.
Even at maximum aperture, the lens allows sharp peripheral image quality, ensuring that sharpness is not compromised. I was also impressed with the auto focus speed while using the camera, especially in low light surroundings. The lens can detect subjects easily even when they are moving. The ability to lock the tracker on a specific human allows fast and accurate focus tracking, which is essential in capturing any significant moments.
Ranging from wide angle to short telephoto distance, the NIKKOR Z 24-70 F/4 S is my go-to lens because of its utmost versatility, compactness, and lightness all packed into one. When paired with the Nikon Z 6, it provides a good balance and feels comfortable in the hands of any photographer.
