The Nikon F-Mount’s Stunning Reliability

When it comes to camera mounts, emphasis is often placed on the reliability of the transmission of information such as aperture value from camera to lens. Next to that, one of the most important roles of a mount is also to securely support a lens. Attachment stability and compatibility with a great variety of optical systems are vital to a SLR and DSLR user – and that is how the Nikon F-Mount came to be since its humble beginnings.

Used on Nikon SLRs and NIKKOR lenses from the introduction of the Nikon F in June 1959 to the current DSLR models, the bayonet-type F-Mount is the communication link between Nikon SLR/DSLR and NIKKOR lenses. 

Since its introduction of over 50 years ago, Nikon has consistently incorporated the same mount without changing its basic structure, even when others found it necessary to alter their lens mounts in response to changing technologies, such as autofocus compatibility and digitalization. Maintaining the same basic structure of lens mount for a longer period means a broader, constantly growing array of compatible lenses.

One of the biggest advantages of the Nikon F-Mount is that you're able to choose from a large selection of lenses for use with the Nikon DSLR system.

These include the AF NIKKOR, AF-S (fitted with Nikon’s original Silent Wave Motor technology) and PC-E perspective-control NIKKOR lenses. In early 2016, the AF-P NIKKOR lenses, fitted with stepping motor to drive fast yet quiet autofocus performance, were also introduced to the already extensive NIKKOR range. From FX-format lenses to the DX-format lenses, photographers are able to enjoy superior lens focusing and optical performance alongside greater agility.

By adapting and extending the capability between the F-Mount and a NIKKOR lens, NIKKOR lenses has further incorporated technologies such as aspherical glass elements,  fluorine coat, Nano Crystal Coat, advanced metering, electromagnetic aperture mechanism for E-type lenses, Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization, and stepping motor technology (AF-P) in addition to the Silent Wave Motor (AF-S) technology.
