Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 open for submissions

The highly anticipated photo contest begins its acceptance for entries, and introduces four judges to its panel

SINGAPORE – Nikon Singapore Pte. Ltd. is pleased to announce that entries for the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 begins today at 1:00pm (JST). Alongside the opening for submissions, four talented individuals from across a variety of fields of expertise are also announced as the first panel of judges for the contest, and they are Marcus Bell, Wang Lei, Carol Guzy, Miho Odaka.

The current appointed four judges will work with Mr. Neville Brody, Dean of the School of Communication at London's Royal College of Art, to select superior works and unearth new talent from the entries received.

The remaining judges will be appointed and announced at a later date.

Marcus Bell
Marcus Bell is the Creative Director and principle photographer of Australian photography studio, Studio Impressions, and one of the most sought after wedding photographers in the world. Over his 20-year career, Mr. Bell has received numerous awards for excellence, both in Australia and abroad, having been named Australian Wedding Photographer of the Year three times. He has also been the recipient of the highly coveted Grand Award for Photojournalism at the Wedding and Portrait Photographer's International (WPPI) awards in the USA.

Wang Lei
Wang Lei began as a photojournalist, and is now an independent multimedia producer. His work focuses primarily on social issues, and his documentaries and press photos have earned him the World Press Photo Contest's Multimedia Award. His multimedia works have been published in such international magazines as The Economist, and he is the main multimedia lecturer for many Chinese news agencies and organizations.

Carol Guzy
Carol Guzy began her career as a staff photographer at The Miami Herald. In 1988 she moved to Washington DC, where she worked as a staff photographer at The Washington Post through 2014. She is currently a freelance photographer. Guzy has been the recipient of many prestigious awards in her chosen profession of photojournalism. She is the only journalist to ever win the Pulitzer Prize four times, and she has been named Photographer of the Year for the National Press Photographers Association three times.

Miho Odaka
After graduating from Sophia University's Department of English Literature, Miho Odaka moved to the U.K. where she earned a Master's Degree from Falmouth College of Arts, Institute of Photography. She started her career as an independent photographer after working at photo galleries planning exhibitions and selling pieces. She is currently involved in a variety of projects that connect Japan and the world in the field of photography, including photo exhibitions, exhibition curation for film festivals, coordinating exhibitions, artist management and instruction, and writing.

Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 Overview

Just as with the previous Contest, all Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 photography and video categories will accept entries recorded with any digital device, including smart devices1, and video entries with a length of 6 to 180 seconds will be accepted. There will be a total of three categories, Nikon 100th Anniversary, Next Generation, and Open.

The theme for the Nikon 100th Anniversary category is "Celebration". In commemoration of Nikon's 100th anniversary coming up in 2017, we hope that entries in this category will cast a light on the many scenes of celebration to be found around the world. We look forward to receiving works that are appropriate for Nikon's centennial, and tell a story that can only be expressed by the entrant.

The theme for the Next Generation and Open categories is "Future". Possibilities for the future are infinite. What sorts of "futures" can be described to the people of the world through images? We look forward to entries that provide a link to the future of the image-making culture.

The announcement of the winners for the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 is planned for July 2017, alongside an awards ceremony in Japan.

1 Entries in the Nikon 100th Anniversary category must be recorded using Nikon equipment.

Eligibility
The contest is open to all, professional and amateur, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. All categories will accept entries captured with any digital device, including smartphones except for Nikon 100th Anniversary Award.

Entry categories
1. Nikon 100th Anniversary Award
- Theme: "Celebration"
- Entry format: Single photo
- Limited to Nikon equipment
- No age restriction

2. Next Generation Award
- Theme: "Future"
- Entry format: single photo, photo story (two to five images), video
- Any equipment can be used
- Entrants must be under the age of 30 (29 and younger)

3. The Open Award
- Theme: "Future"
- Entry format: single photo, photo story (two to five images), video
- Any equipment may be used
- No age restriction

October 17, 2016 to February 27, 2017 (closes at 1:00pm JST)

Enter the contest by providing the required information in the entry form on the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 website (www.nikon-photocontest.com). This form will be available from the first date entries are accepted (October 17, 2016).

Awards and prizes

One entry in the Nikon 100th Anniversary category will be selected to receive the Nikon 100th Anniversary Grand Prize, one entry from each of the Next Generation and Open categories will be selected to receive Grand Prize, and one entry from all those submitted will be selected to receive the Award for the Most Popular Entry. In addition, a total of 63 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded to entries in each of the Nikon 100th Anniversary, Next Generation, and Open categories. All winners will be presented with prizes, and all winning entries will be exhibited on the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 Web Gallery, and on official Facebook and Instagram pages. We are also planning exhibitions at venues managed by Nikon, including the Nikon Museum.
