The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR employs two fluorite lens elements to achieve high image quality and a significant reduction in weight. Join me as I learn more about the capabilities of this lens, which truly shine in situations where it is difficult to get close to your subjects, such as wild birds, animals, and sports. A Northern Gannet flying at twilight. When using older generation super-telephoto lenses, it was necessary to narrow the aperture by one stop to achieve sharp depictive quality. With this lens, however, you can obtain sharp and clear image quality at the widest aperture.

A White-crowned Sparrow resting near a body of water. The Nano Crystal Coat reduces unwanted effects such as flare and ghosting when capturing backlit subjects. At a focal length of 500mm, the depth of field is extremely shallow and produces a creamy bokeh effect.
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR is a super-telephoto lens with exceptionally high image quality for photographing subjects that you cannot easily get up close to, such as wild birds, wildlife, and sports. Attached to the D850, the lens feels well balanced and can be handled comfortably when shooting handheld. The Vibration Reduction (VR) system delivers approximately 4 shutter speed stops of image stabilization. The lens also comes with NORMAL and SPORT modes, with the latter coming in handy when shooting moving objects.
In addition, this lens boasts a short minimum shooting distance of just 3.6m, making it extremely useful when photographing small wild birds at very close range. The lens contains 16 elements in 12 groups, including 2 fluorite and 3 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lens elements to obtain extremely detailed and sharp image quality at the widest aperture. When you take a photo of a wild bird, every detail is captured right down to each individual feather. With the Nano Crystal Coat, unwanted effects such as flare and ghosting are reduced when capturing backlit subjects. The lens is also highly compatible with the 1.4x or 2x teleconverters, and retains majority of the image quality even when shooting at 700mm f/5.6 (with a 1.4x TC) or 1000mm f/8 (with a 2x TC). In addition, the lens has 4 focus function buttons on its side that can have features assigned to them, such as AF start and AF stop.
Although the lens may have a high price tag, one advantage it possesses is durability. With the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR lens, you can easily bring out the full capabilities of the high-resolution D850.
