Utilizing a stepping motor that realizes silent and speedy autofocusing, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR is a super telephoto lens that provides a focal length up to 450mm in FX/35mm format, all in a lightweight body. We take a closer look at what makes this lens stand out. (Photo and report by Noboru Sonehara)
FL: 70mm(equivalent to 105mm in FX/35mm format)/ Aperture-priority Auto(f/7.1, 1/80 sec, EV-0.7)/ ISO 100/ WB: Auto 1
The use of ED lens elements has suppressed chromatic aberration, and the lens provides stable depictive performance throughout the entire zoom lens. I shot these fruits using the 70mm wide-angle end. The subjects were faithfully depicted overall—note how the colours appear natural and the textures have been captured and well-rendered.
FL: 300mm(equivalent to 450mm in FX/35mm format)/ Aperture-priority Auto(f/6.3, 1/200 sec, EV-0.7)/ ISO 800 /WB: Auto 1
The highlight of the 300mm telephoto end of the lens is its magnification effect—I managed to shoot faraway subjects so close up, they filled the entire screen. With an AF-P lens like this one, AF drive is both fast and silent, providing greater ease when photographing subjects such as birds, which are sensitive to sound.
The AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR is a super-telephoto lens for DX-format cameras and features a focal length of 105 - 450mm in FX/35mm format equivalent terms. “AF-P” in the lens name indicates that it uses a stepping motor in its AF drive. In super-telephoto lenses, the focusing lenses move a lot, but the stepping motor ensures that autofocusing is conducted not just quickly, but also silently, providing an advantage not just during still photography but also for shooting video, where you would want to avoid capturing the machine noise from AF drive in your footage.
Another appealing feature of this lens is its built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) mechanism, which carries out image stabilisation by up to 4 shutter speed stops. This is a very reassuring feature to have for super-telephoto photography, which is especially prone to camera shake. You can now shoot in live view, where there is a high chance that you might not have as secure a hold on the camera as you would like, and release the shutter without too much worry about the shot being ruined by camera shake.
Even with the super-telephoto zoom range, the lens weighs a mere 415g, which suits the compact and lightweight D5600 perfectly. A handy option for photographing a variety of scenes, ranging from sightseeing scenes and tourist spots to zoos and grand landscapes, this is one lens you would benefit from having if you want to cover super-telephoto angles, be it for still photographs or for movies.
